Work problems

The work place can be a wonderful and exciting place. On other occasions it can be threatening, anxiety provoking or just plain dull. Personal difficulties can also impact on your capacity to function competently, all of these things can have a negative impact on self esteem and self worth.

Working with difficult colleagues:

Bullying – is about feeling unsafe.
It can be around:

  • Repeated hurtful remarks about you, your family, sex, gender identity, race or culture
  • It can also involve repeatedly making fun of you or your work.
  • Excluding your participation in work related activities
  • Intimidating you by making you feel undervalued as an employee
  • Physical abuse – pushing, shoving, tripping, or grabbing you while you are in the workplace
  • Threatening or attacking with equipment, knives, guns, clubs or any other type of object that can be turned into a weapon.
  • Initiation processes or hazing – where you are made to do humiliating or inappropriate things in order to be accepted as part of the team.

Harassment – is also about feeling unsafe:
Psychological harassment involves such actions as:

  • playing mind games, ganging up on you, deliberately holding back information you need for getting your work done properly.

Sexual harassment involves

  • particularly unwelcome touching, sexually explicit comments and personal requests that are inappropriate.

If any of these issues are causing you concern, then seek help and advice from a professional counsellor. The counselling environment provides safety and security while you explore in more depth the issues that are causing you concern.
